Manchester City have emerged as the highest spenders in this season’s winter transfer window. According to The Athletic, the reigning Premier League champions have spent a whopping amount of £178 million on a total of 5 signings.

It was a comparatively quiet transfer window, with clubs spending quite strictly. However, City were keen on overcoming their disastrous form so far this season, which resulted in their heavy spending.

The Cityzens announced the signing of Nico Gonzalez from Porto for a hefty amount of £50m on the deadline day of the transfer window yesterday, following Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Claudio Echeverri, and Vitor Reis’ deals in the previous weeks.

Pep Guardiola and his side have struggled to compete with Liverpool and Arsenal this season. It seems that Rodri’s absence has hit them like a dagger pierced through the chest.

This is their second most expensive transfer window since Sheikh Mansour’s takeover as Guardiola aims to rescue his drowning ship.

Pep Guardiola’s new squad: Taking a look at Manchester City’s new signings

This season has not gone according to the plan for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola. The reigning Premier League champions lost six out of the eight games they played in the league in the months of November and December.

The beginning of the new year hasn't been very kind to them as well. Therefore, fans would hope that their new signings spark their team’s comeback in order to save their season.

Let's take a look at the new recruitments made by the Manchester City to try and rescue them from this horrible situation:

Omar Marmoush

City signed Eintracht Frankfurt’s star player for £59m in order to bolster their attacking prowess. He is already nicknamed “The Egyptian Prince,” indicating that the young forward has huge shoes to fill.

Vitor Reis

Joining from Palmeiras for a fee of £29.6m, Vitor Reis is another gem that Man City have scouted this winter. Guardiola is focusing on building a young core to try and revive the spark in his midfield.

Abdukodir Khusanov

Khusanov’s signing is a historic one, as the 20-year-old becomes the first player from Uzbekistan to play in the Premier League. City paid £33.6m to RC Lens for him, showcasing the trust they have in the 20-year-old defender.

Nico Gonzalez

Pep Guardiola was desperate to find a suitable replacement for Rodri, with Mateo Kovacic not being able to fill the shoes of the Ballon d'Or winner. Therefore, the club decided to sign Nico Gonzalez, who has proven himself at Porto, Valencia, and even FC Barcelona.

Claudio Echeverri

Another young talent recruited this winter, City signed Claudio Echeverri, following his stellar performance for the Argentina U-17 team.

The youngster, however, has been instantly loaned out to River Plate in order for him to gain some experience by playing regular minutes.

Echeverri has been tipped to become one of the “future stars” to look out for.
