Liverpool’s star defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is reportedly on the verge of agreeing to a long-term move with Real Madrid, which will put an end to a season-long transfer saga.
In a massive turn of events, the English right-back has decided to snub a potential contract extension with Liverpool. The constant delay in finalising a new deal had been raising serious doubts regarding the board’s handling of Alexander-Arnold's fragile situation, who since January has been tipped for a move to the Spanish capital in the summer.
And now, as per Fabrizio Romano, the 26-year-old has already communicated his desire to join Real Madrid in the summer to his close ones, with a five-year deal worth a staggering €222,000 per week expected to be finalised “very soon”.
Real Madrid's legacy or Liverpool’s love?: Trent Alexander-Arnold seems to have made his choice
Alexander-Arnold’s situation with Liverpool has appeared confusing and doubtful ever since the beginning of the year, with multiple reports claiming that the Englishman has been more interested in joining Real in the summer than extending his contract with the Reds.
However, the dilemma of choosing fame over love and vice versa always looked like a deep one for the 26-year-old, who has what many have labelled as a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to play for the mighty Real Madrid or an unparalleled opportunity to become possibly the biggest icon of his boyhood club.
The 15-time Champions League winners are regarded as a “dream destination" for any person playing the beautiful game, being the main reason for their unstoppable “pull”, which, over the years, only a handful of players have been able to refuse.
Arguably the biggest name to say no to the mighty Real Madrid in recent years was none other than Liverpool’s captain fantastic, Steven Gerrard, who, like Trent, was once a top target for the Los Blancos.
The Spanish giants had made several attempts for multiple years to try and lure the iconic midfielder to move to the Bernabeu but failed each time due to Gerrard’s unbreakable bond with the Reds.
As mentioned by Gerrard in his interviews, the Englishman “never thought of playing for any other club in Europe” than Liverpool, spending a phenomenal 26 years at the club.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, another special homegrown talent, has drawn comparisons to Steven Gerrard due to his incredible talent and similar roots to the iconic captain, with fans often calling him the “next Steven Gerrard” and expecting him to stay at Liverpool for his entire career.
However, it seems like the star right-back has made his decision and decided not to follow his idol’s steps and plan the remainder of the future with the game away from his hometown, embarking on a new journey in his already stellar career.
