Nottingham Forest continue to impress in their fairytale season as they inch closer to clinching a spot in the UEFA Champions League after beating Manchester City 1-0 at home.
Pep Guardiola's men dominated possession and created more chances while accumulating an xG of 0.85 compared to Nottingham’s 0.66, as per SofaScore.
However, Forest scored the only goal of the game, securing crucial three points in their push for their first European qualification.
Their stunning victory against the reigning Premier League champions has taken them to being 4 points ahead of Chelsea in fourth spot, registering 51 points in 28 games.
Forest vs. City: As it happened
Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were lucky to head into the tunnel at halftime with a 0-0 scoreline as Manchester City’s inefficiency in front of the goal prevented them from taking the lead before halftime.
Nico Gonzalez could've scored his first goal for Manchester City in the first half of the game itself, which was the visitors’ best chance of the half, but his thunderous shot struck the woodwork.
To big surprise, City looked too slow and not threatening enough in the second half, allowing Forest to grow into the game and eventually take control.
Callum Hudson-Odoi’s brilliant run forward in the 83rd minute allowed him to take a shot at the goal, which went past Ederson, giving the hosts a deserving lead.
Once it was 1-0, the hosts created a roadblock by parking the bus and completely blocked out Guardiola’s men.
City’s midfielder Mateo Kovacic got close to finding an equalizer in the dying moments of the game, but his shot went wide, sealing the win for the resilient Nottingham Forest.
Pep Guardiola defends Manchester City star Jack Grealish amidst severe criticism
Star winger Jack Grealish was spotted leaving a pub earlier this week, which led to fans and pundits questioning his professionalism amidst his inconsistent performances for City since his arrival.
However, Pep Guardiola defended the England international when asked about his actions off the pitch.
The Spanish manager revealed that it was a day off for all players, while also stating that a player's personal life is not where the manager or pundits should give their opinions.
He also stated that his job is to judge his players only based on their performances on the pitch and how it impacts the team.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Guardiola said, “They know what they have to do; it's a day off; there's no training. They have a private life; they will do whatever they want. I'm not going to control what they do in their private life.” (sic)
He further added, "I judge what I see on the pitch: the training sessions and the performances in the game. That's what I judge.” (sic)
