Recent reports from ESPN have claimed that Liverpool FC have begun their search for possible alternatives to replace their star defender, Virgil van Dijk, in case they fail to agree on a new deal with the Dutch captain.
As mentioned in our previous report, Van Dijk’s contract with the Reds will come to an end in the upcoming summer, with the centre-back stating his calmness yet doubtfulness regarding his future.
The increasing delay in an agreement with the 33-year-old’s camp, along with massive offers from European giants such as Paris Saint-Germain, has reportedly prompted Liverpool to prepare for the “worst case scenario”, in case they fail to extend the Dutch captain's stay.
Liverpool identify England’s star prospect as Van Dijk’s potential replacement
As per The Mirror, the colossal Crystal Palace centre-back, Marc Guehi, is the name that is popping out of the shadows and has caught the Merseyside giants’ attention.
As it stands, Liverpool might need a suitable successor for their 33-year-old captain, who not only is a strong defender, but also possesses the ability to lead the backline.
Guehi’s tremendous display of his abilities as a defender and even as leader of the backline for Crystal Palace has attracted a lot of interest from overseas clubs as well as from English giants, while also luring the mighty Reds to monitor his situation.
The former Chelsea player has become one of the most sought after defenders in Europe, with clubs like Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Arsenal showing a major interest in securing his services permanently.
Guehi’s consistent displays for the Eagles in the Premier League last season also earned him his first-ever senior England call-up under Gareth Southgate for the 2024 UEFA Euros.
However, as per Football.London, Crystal Palace are not willing to part ways with their star defender, which indicates that a only staggering amount of money could lure the Eagles to consider any potential deals.
On top of that, with rival clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal also running in the race to sign the 24-year-old talent, it is fair to say that it will be quite a difficult task for Liverpool to secure Marc Guehi’s signature.
