Neymar Jr. is reportedly planning a reunion with his former Barcelona teammates, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, by seeking a move to Inter Miami in the summer. The Brazilian is currently playing for Saudi champions Al-Hilal after joining them for a record-breaking deal in 2023. The superstar signed a 2-year contract worth a staggering $200 million. However, Neymar’s signing as the poster boy of Al-Hilal has not panned out as the club would have expected.
Neymar’s proneness to injuries has ruined his spell with the Al-Malaki, with the Brazilian clocking a total of only 42 minutes in all of 2024 for the Saudi giants. The negligible minutes, however, did not stop the superstar from earning a mammoth €101 million through wages from Al-Hilal. Fans of the club have labelled the Brazilian as a “liability.” His absence has not impacted the team’s performance, as Hilal still continue to dominate. While Neymar might not be having an impact on the club’s performance on the pitch, his huge wages surely are outside of it. With Neymar’s contract running down this summer, the majority expect the club and the Brazilian to part ways, with Al-Hilal targeting Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as their next massive signing.
Inter Miami is where Neymar’s “hearts” are
If Neymar were to leave in the summer, Inter Miami would be the perfect destination for him. His beloved friends and former Barcelona teammates, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, will be looking forward to reuniting with the Brazilian. Along with Messi and Suarez, Miami also have Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and manager Javier Mascherano, who also played with Neymar during his glorious Barcelona days. In a recent interview with CNN, when asked about the possibility of reuniting with Messi and Suarez, Ney said, “It would be incredible. They are my friends, we still talk to each other. It would be interesting to revive that trident. I'm happy at Al-Hilal, I'm happy in Saudi Arabia, but who knows?” (sic)
Neymar’s links to Inter Miami look very strong, with the club reportedly also interested in signing the player. In a recent press conference, Inter Miami’s manager, Javier Mascherano, was questioned about these links. The Argentine responded by saying, “We cannot talk about Neymar because we have nothing. Obviously Neymar is a great player. Every coach in the world wants him but at the moment, but you know the MLS rules around the salary cap. So for us in this moment, it's impossible to try to think about him.”(sic)
The move appears to be quite complicated
While a move will be an absolute treat for the fans, the salary restrictions in the MLS could restrict Neymar’s potential move to the US. The Designated Player Rule in the MLS, which allows only 3 players per club, whose salaries can go beyond the league’s salary cap limits. The problem for Neymar and Inter Miami is that the club already has 3 designated players, namely Leonardo Campana, Sergio Busquets, and captain Lionel Messi.
