Post-match analysis: Amad’s spectacular 3 earn crucial 3 for Manchester United

Manchester United battled it out with Southampton in matchday 21 of the Premier League. United grabbed all 3 points by beating the Saints by a scoreline of 3-1, with Amad Diallo scoring a brilliant hat-trick. 

The Red Devils came into the match with confidence, having performed brilliantly in their last 2 matches against tough opponents, namely Liverpool and Arsenal. They faced a Southampton team, who are currently at the bottom of the points table, at a severe risk of being relegated. 

However, United experienced complete unexpectedness as with the Saints almost walked away with a shocking win at Old Trafford. If it weren't for Diallo’s heroics, United would have suffered a humiliating loss to Southampton. 

An unexpected performance from the Saints

It was surely a very unexpected performance from Southampton as they nearly walked away with all 3 points last night. In a game where United were quite wasteful of their chances, Southampton went toe to toe by causing major blows to Ruben Amorim’s defence. 

This was one of the best attacking performances of the season for Ivan Juric’s team, who have the worst attack in the entire league this season, scoring just 13 goals. Southampton attempted a total of 13 shots, drawing saves from Andre Onana on 6 occasions. They had an xG of 1.54, which is amongst their highest in the current campaign.

The Saints even scored the opening goal of the game from a corner kick and managed to maintain their 1-goal lead till the 82nd minute, before Amad Diallo exploded into life to score the equalizer.

Despite a good attacking display, the Saints’ defensive woes continued as Manchester United’s wastefulness allowed them to stay in the game till the end. 

A memorable game for Manchester United and Ruben Amorim

It turned out to be quite a challenging game for Manchester United as they barely escaped an embarrassing defeat. Previous defensive weakness haunted Amorim and his men again as they conceded from a corner kick yet again.

However, despite the negatives, Amorim definitely witnessed many positives from his side. In fact, he would have been witnessing these positives over the course of the last few weeks, due United’s resilient performances recently.

The Portuguese manager's team showed immense character right till the end to try and come back in the game. United continued to fight back throughout the game, just like they did against Liverpool and Arsenal. This showcased the change in the mentality of the team, who now seem to fight harder than before.

Tactically as well, it turned out to be a memorable game for Ruben Amorim. Bringing on Antony for Kobbie Mainoo at the halftime mark provided extra attacking force to his team. This allowed them to go all out in attack, leading to a plethora of chances being created, with a total of 23 shots being attempted by the Red Devils, recording an xG of 3.54, scoring 3 goals.

Amad Diallo was the game-changer for United yesterday, with the youngster turning the game around all by himself. Diallo scored a breathtaking hat-trick to complete United's comeback and secure all 3 points for his team.

It has been a regular occurrence for Diallo to become Manchester United's hero this season, especially since the arrival of Ruben Amorim. 

In an exceptional season so far, Amad Diallo has registered 9 goals and 7 assists in just 18 starts across all competitions. He has even starred in big games for United this season, with the most memorable one being his match-winning performance against Manchester City recently.
