PSV Eindhoven mounted a stunning comeback to knock Italian giants Juventus from the Champions League, beating them in the knockout playoffs with an aggregate score of 4-3.
Thiago Motta’s side showcased a pragmatic approach and appeared to be playing for a draw to see the tie off.
However, PSV took advantage of their electrifying home atmosphere and produced a fabulous performance.
Croatian ace Ivan Perisic scored a sensational goal in the 53rd minute to give the home side a much-deserved lead.
Juventus equalised just ten minutes later with Timothee Weah’s goal, who thought he had secured the qualification for the Bianconeri.
However, the hosts kept mounting pressure on the visitors, with Saibari’s goal in the 74th minute giving PSV all the momentum they needed.
Flamingo’s close-range strike early in the extra time took the scoreline to 3-1 on the night and settled the tie for them with a scoreline of 4-3.
Three Italian teams, namely, AC Milan, Atalanta, and Juventus, have been knocked out from this season’s Champions League, with Inter Milan being the only Italian side to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.
Thiago Motta’s Juventus: The most “boring” club in Italy?
When Juventus announced Thiago Motta as Massimiliano Allegri’s replacement at the beginning of the current campaign, the fans expected a shift in tactical play, from pragmatic football to a modern style of football.
However, things have been very difficult for the Italian manager so far.
Juve have been decent defensively, but their numbers in the attack have gone down drastically in comparison to the previous seasons.
On top of that, The Old Lady are missing the ‘X-factor’ required to win games, having drawn 13 games in Serie A so far out of 25 games, and currently, sitting in 4th place in the Serie A points table with 46 points, being 10 points behind the league leaders Napoli.
Thiago Motta had explained earlier that his team is in a transition period and will only improve with time.
The Italian giants did finally look to be on track after winning four consecutive games until PSV showed up.
Last night’s elimination will surely land a huge blow to Juventus’ confidence, in what has already been a turbulent season for them so far.
