Newcastle United clinched their first major trophy after a long wait of seven decades, defeating Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley in the final of the EFL Cup on Sunday.
Since 1969, the Toons have played in five major finals, losing all of them.
However, fate had different plans this time for Eddie Howe and his men, who have managed to etch their names in the club’s history books.
Newcastle looked extremely determined on the day of the final, aiming to end their trophy drought and give their fans a moment to cherish forever, managing to do just that.
The Carabao Cup Final: As It Happened
Liverpool headed into the Carabao Cup final after a disappointing loss to PSG in the Champions League last week.
The players appeared unmotivated and lethargic as they took the pitch on Sunday and eventually succumbed to the pressurising atmosphere at Wembley.
The first half was cagey, with Arne Slot's men keeping most of the ball; however, Newcastle were quick and created multiple chances to put early pressure on the Liverpool defence.
In the penultimate minute of the first half, local hero Dan Burn leaped over Alexis Mac Allister and smashed in a brilliant header from a corner kick to give Newcastle the lead, giving the Magpies all the momentum they needed.
Liverpool did head into the second half with more energy, but Newcastle's defensive roadblock was too strong for Mo Salah and co. to penetrate through on goal, despite having a few close shots on goal.
Despite the Reds’ attempts to score an equaliser, Alexander Isak put Newcastle in complete control, scoring a powerful volley past Kelleher in goal to score what would go on to be the winning goal of the game.
Chiesa managed to pull one back for Liverpool in the dying moments of the game, but it turned out to be just a consolation goal as Newcastle’s entire camp burst into tears as the final whistle blew.
As per SofaScore, Howe’s men accumulated an xG of 1.84 in comparison to Liverpool’s 0.66, being the deserved winners of the contest.
The beautiful picture of this historic Newcastle win
As the full-time whistle blew, a vast majority of the Newcastle supporters were stunned in silence as their team lifted a domestic trophy after a staggering 70 years.
The moment of silence was followed by huge roars of the “Toon Army”, which completely rocked the Wembley Stadium.
After the game, many loyal supporters stated that this historic win “will be the beginning of a new journey” for their club.
Newcastle United’s boss, Eddie Howe, who was the man of the hour, dedicated the win to the “incredible” supporters of the club, who showcased their support even in the toughest of times.
Speaking after the match, Howe said, "This was a victory for everyone: the club, the city, and everyone who has given loyalty and support over the last number of decades and suffered the pain of defeats. Today is a moment that everyone should enjoy.” (sic)
He further added, "It's amazing what football can do. It has the ability to give people days they will always remember. It has been such a long wait that we will never forget this. I will never forget this.” (sic)
