Liverpool FC’s captain and star defender, Virgil van Dijk, has drawn the spotlight once again regarding his contract situation with the Reds, as his current deal is set to expire in the upcoming summer.
The Liverpool fans have been left stressed and worried regarding their captain’s future, as many European giants are also patiently waiting to pounce upon an opportunity to sign the iconic centre-back on a free transfer.
For the last 8 years, the 33-year-old defender has been one of the best servants for the Merseyside giants and, as per multiple reports, still wishes to continue his career at the club.
However, the constant delay in his contract extension indicates that the Liverpool board are not able to agree to a new deal with Van Dijk, which also increases the possibility of a potential departure at the end of the season for the Dutch captain.
“There’s no need to panic about my future”: Van Dijk provides an update regarding his future amidst speculations
The Dutch captain has taken an initiative to make himself clear, as he doesn’t want to give any sort of false hope to the fans regarding his future at Liverpool.
As per The Independent, Van Dijk said, “I don’t want to create any anxiety or anything like that; I just keep my head down and focus on hopefully winning the next 10 games. I am sure by the end of the season there will be news.” (sic)
He further added, “But what kind of news? I am not sure. It’s not a one-two-three discussion, and there we go. There are multiple factors, and as long as I am calm to you guys (the media), then there is no need to panic, whatever may happen in the future.” (sic)
The Liverpool boss Arne Slot has made his intentions clear regarding his superstar defender, clearly stating that he wants the 33-year-old to be a crucial part of his team for the next season as well.
As reported by Goal earlier, Slot’s high value of his captain has prompted the club’s board to even “break the bank” in order to try and keep the star defender beyond the upcoming summer, as Van Dijk still remains arguably the most crucial player in the current Liverpool squad.
