Xabi Alonso is on course to become Real Madrid's next manager in the summer of 2025. According to Football España, Real have reached an agreement with the Bayer Leverkusen manager. The Spaniard is the top managerial candidate for the club as they plan on replacing Ancelotti after the current season ends.

Carlo Ancelotti, whose second spell at Real Madrid began back in 2021, is planning on moving on to the next phase in his career. The Italian manager is highly interested in managing an international team, with Brazil NT as the frontrunners. Ancelotti's second spell has also been a very successful one, winning 11 trophies in just 4 seasons. Therefore, Xabi Alonso has massive shoes to fill.

Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid: A match made in heaven

Xabi Alonso’s connection with the Los Blancos goes way back. The legendary midfielder joined Real Madrid back in 2009, making a €34m move from Liverpool. Alonso has been linked to Real Madrid since the beginning of the current season, following his unbelievable season with Bayer Leverkusen. The Spaniard enjoyed a tremendous season, with achievements that have been etched in the history books.

Leverkusen won 2 trophies last season, namely the DFB-Pokal and a historical unbeaten Bundesliga title. Alonso even led his side to the final of the Europa League, where they fell short to Gaspernini’s Atalanta. That remarkably was Leverkusen’s first and only defeat of the entire 2023/24 season.

Alonso has become a man in demand following his unbelievable performance at Leverkusen. Not only Real Madrid, but several other big clubs, such as Liverpool, were also targeting the Spaniard in the summer of 2024. However, Alonso decided to stay put at least till the end of the 2024/25 season, which has turned out to be perfect for Madrid.

A clause in Alonso’s contract will allow him to leave the club at the end of the current contract, making things simple for the Los Blancos, who believe they already have their next manager ready to take over.
